She Didn't Give Me the Credit . . . And That's How it Should Be
May 10, 2024Running TEDDYco Media, our online advertising company, and Denise Tallcott Leadership, our business coaching and training business is truly a pleasure. I get to work with people each day to help people see their value, their business's value and the value in others. We get to help other see how investing in their people is the best thing we can do. How people are the best parts of our lives. What an honor!
Over the weekend, the weather was perfect for some trampoline jumping. As I sit on the sideline, controlling the awesome Spotify channel, of course, I hear Sydney (7) start to tell Hudson (5.5) a story.
“People are the most important thing in this world, Hudson. They are so much more important than the things we have. Let’s remember that,” says Sydney Tallcott to her brother.
Man, I was beaming. On cloud nine, really. It's not always easy for us to recognize our own wins, especially in parenting. But this, I was so proud of the work.
“Sydney, that was beautiful! Where did you learn that?”, asks her mommy, selfishly wanting credit.
“Daddy.”
Enter jaw drop. And there again, we learn how humbling parenting can be. Not only was I trying to make this conversation about me, I was wanting external validation from a 7-year-old. haha Perspective, right? As I quickly recovered and replied with, "Daddy is so smart.", I reflected on the greatness of the situation. When two people are so aligned with one theme or idea, those that listen don't even remember where it came from. And that's how it should be! Isn't that what true leadership is?! Helping others excel to the next level without wanting or needing credit.
And yes, she'll be hearing about this story in about 10 years.
