They call me Coach
Jul 18, 2024I admit, as a K-3rd softball coach, I get way too into it. I'm cheering these girls on for even missing the ball because dangit, they tried. I wish I would have had this much passion and drive to win when I was playing in high school, if I'm being honest.
We had our last games of the season a couple weeks ago and wow, did these girls play SO well. Not only because they almost beat the #1 seed with a final score of 21-20 but also because of their immense improvements. We were catching, throwing and hitting so much better over a six-week timeframe. Amazing!
Before the #1 seed game, we beat a team that was fabulous as well. In that game, brag moment here, Sydney and the pitcher had a game saving play. Sydney was catching, there was one out, runner at third, force was at second and the score was 7-7. Nail biter, right? Batter hits the ball to the pitcher. Sydney, after hearing her mom-coach all season strongly encourage her each time to "HOP UP!" while catching, did just that. She yelled to the pitcher, "Throw it to me!", where she caught the ball and tagged the runner out. Us coaches and parents are cheering, and Sydney just smiles and crouches back down for the next play.
As the girls run into the dugout to bat after holding the other team off, we say to Sydney and the pitcher, "Do you know what you both did?!" They knew they got the out but didn't understand the impact of that decision.
Do you see where I'm going here?
Reflection is important. Realizing the impact of your choices, both good and bad, help you build pride in a selfless way and to also do better next time. If we don't take time to evaluate our decisions of the day, we can't get better. You're not being selfish, you're taking action to better the next day than you were the day before. And often times, we don't have someone stopping us to say, "Do you know what you did?".
Take time today to reflect on some good and not-so-good decisions you've made this week. That's one of the best ways to build your self-worth and confidence in your abilities.
And be sure to stay tuned to next season's coaching lessons! 😉
